October, 2008 News

Welcome to UCLA Rugby and our 2008-09 rugby season! There has been a lot of exciting news regarding UCLA Rugby in the last several months both on and off of the field with much more on the horizon as our events schedule has been set for the upcoming year.

UCLA Rugby Endowment Established

We are pleased to announce the establishment of an endowment within the UCLA Foundation that will remain in perpetuity in order to grow and to fund UCLA Rugby Forever. This is a huge step forward in the development of our program and we are extremely grateful to Larry Layne and Sheelagh Boyd for helping us with their initial pledge. This is a critical time to get behind this aspect of our fundraising as we would like to at least match our initial gift by year’s end. Thank you Larry and Sheelagh!

Northern California Golf and Tailgate Party
Join us in the Bay Area for the UCLA vs. Cal football weekend which is
packed with exciting events including a golf outing on Friday Oct 24 at
Presidio Golf Club. Our first ever Pre-Game BBQ party at the Bear’s Lair
on Oct 25 and of course the Football game to close out the weekend.
Please contact Coach Scott Stewart regarding all arrangements or
check out the information on our web site at www.bruinrugby.com.

Back on the Field
We have just completed our first week of trials and have fielded well over
90 players in what has been an encouraging week as more returning
players are currently overseas. With Top recruits Tanner Heaphy
and Paul Martinez coming in as Freshmen and Junior back Blaine
Scully earning a spot on the USA Eagle squad over the summer the
prospects of running rugby are back in Westwood.
The Southern California coaches have spent many hours determining
that a 5 team Premier League was the best way to lead to better
overall competition. UCLA will be sharing Home and Away matches with
Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State and Arizona. This set-up
will be tough and demand that the students are the fittest and best
prepared as possible both on the field and in the classroom.
We are also looking to host some other quality programs including
UC Davis, currently with former Bruin Andrew Acosta ’91 on their staff,
and possibly Dartmouth over Spring Break. Plans to tour again are in
the works as the last tour will be etched in the players’
memories for some time to come! Please watch the website
at www.bruinrugby.com for future updates and details.

Dennis Storer Pac-10 Tournament
This classic College tournament will be held over the weekend of
Jan 17 & 18 at UCLA and has the distinct possibility of being run
by Pac-10 properties with sponsorship and funding available to each
program. This is an historic movement as it would be the only major
NCAA conference that is backing rugby in the country. No small feat
and one all of our players, administrators and Alumni should be proud
of. Come out and watch the action and help us to continue to make it
the best!

Hall of Fame Dinner
Please save the dates of May 15 and May 16, 2009 for our annual
Hall of Fame Weekend. We will be hosting a BBQ at the Palisades
Beach Club on the Friday evening before the formal dinner to be
held at Covel Commons at UCLA. We will induct 5 new members to
the UCLA Rugby Hall of Fame of who will be announced shortly.
This is a major fundraising event for the year and a special
occasion to honor our past and recognize the achievements of
our current program.

On behalf of all of our players and the Friends of Bruin Rugby, we wish
to thank all of our supporters for their continued support.
We look forward to seeing you on the sidelines!

Regards,
Scott Stewart
